Revel mobile for educators
Hypothesis
Given the usage of Revel mobile for learners, and that it has an audience with instructors, we believe that by providing the educators with an experience that caters to their needs, we will improve classroom preparation and create a value add to increase Revel adoption.
My role
Design lead, workshop facilitation UX design, research, visual direction
Interviews
I partnered with a learning designer and product marketer to interview twelve educators who already used Revel.
Key insights
Educators look for trends through questions and learning objectives to inform them on what they may need to revise in their upcoming lectures
Educators use multiple devices working in tandem during their lessons, especially during Covid
“Don’t call me, I’ll call you” Educators check in on students but they are not as interested in receiving additional communications from neither student or app, especially not in text, chat or iMessage
screener survey
Design sprint
Adapting to remote work, I conducted a design sprint using Miro with a large team (possibly too large…) including members from Design, Business, Engineering and Product. We landed on the following:
Goals
To enhance student engagement by enhancing educator engagement
To increase sales of Revel based on this value add
Benchmarks
Increased weekly usage from our educator users
Reduced time spent in the website
Design sprint journey map
How might we…
After journey mapping and reviewing with our experts, we landed on a “How might we” to frame our solution:
“How might we help instructors identify where they need to support individual student”
Sketches
As a team, we sketched over a dozen concepts.
Diving in
In working through user flows, it was important to get into the data as quick as possible. In the competitive analysis that followed the design sprint, we identified Fitness Apps as suitable analogous competitors.
Information architecture
It was important to me that we had allowed for screens to repeat so that the educator would quickly find what they needed no matter which flow they took.
Wireframes
I had a few different design ideations, this one made the most sense to me. I was able to keep screen patterns down to three. This is the one we tested:
User testing
I launched an unmoderated test via Usertesting.com
Key Insights:
Low Activity is a tricky metric that doesn’t always represent the success of the student. Some students only need to spend a short amount of time on the subject/
Challenging Content is the key feature and would have impact IRL
Struggling Student would make remediation more efficient, particularly for smaller classes
