Mobile Strategy

My first role at Pearson was to focus on our “Mobile First” strategy in a landscape that lacked consensus as to why we should go mobile first. While students were obviously adopting mobile behaviors, the instructor, our primary persona, was not. Analytics wise, our users were not adopting our products on mobile devices (monstrous load times, an abundance of iframes and content that didn’t render to smaller screen sizes).

For us to be a mobile progressive company, we would need to reconsider every facet of our content/ Not a small feat for a [publishing company.

Our first step was to convince the company of the value of adopting mobile in earnest and to shift the philosophy from mobile first to omni channel, or across device.

This is the presentation we put together to frame the discussion

My Role: Strategy, UX Lead. UX design.

The outcome of this strategy has been a effort to modernize every work stream that converges in an end to end student experience. From the dashboard experience to content and assessments, Revel mobile has become a highly regarded study application.

As of 9/22/19 - it has a 4.8 star review from the Apple store and a 4.6 star review from Google Play.

“It’s amazing! Well structured and easy to follow. I prefer it to the website honestly”

- Five star review from Apple’s app store

Revel Mobile Content Experience

Pearson’s Revel mobile has gone through over 30 rounds of user testing across the different work streams. Currently six design contribute to the end to end flow, paired into different disciplines (Assessments, Content, Dashboard). My responsibility is to spark the design direction through conceptual wireframes, collaborate in daily design and give coordinated design reviews to insure consistency.

Some of the most challenging problems have been in the assessment space, where our goal was to make complicated study practices easy to use on mobile devices. To do so, we have designed and built our own keyboards and other tools required for math disciplines.

Recently, Pearson has undergone a brand update and while we are updating the visual design of Revel Mobile, we are ceasing the opportunity to introduce some simplifications in this next iteration.
